Is Duckworth-Lewis Method is complete?
# I am not a man from cricket but knew something about the game.Actually my topic is not directly related with cricket but its about important rule of cricket for retargeting the score in a interrupted match-i.e. the method given by the Mr. Duckworth & Lewis.
# Before telling something about this method we should look at the condition when this method is applied.Actually this method is applied in a one day international cricket when the match is interrupted due rain or any other cause. This method either do retargeting the score or declair the winner.
Before this method there was no effcient rule. There was a rule called Rain Rule. Ok i will not comment that rule.
#If we just go through the method of this calculation we can see the basis of this calculation is nothing but a table given by them. This table is depends on two parameters that are OVER LEFT in the match & WICKET remaining in the batting team. The calcutating process using this table is very easy & its also available in the internate. The table is follows:-
| Wickets lost | ||||
Overs left | 0 | 2 | 5 | 7 | 9 |
|
|
|
|
|
|
50 | 100.0 | 83.8 | 49.5 | 26.5 | 7.6 |
40 | 90.3 | 77.6 | 48.3 | 26.4 | 7.6 |
30 | 77.1 | 68.2 | 45.7 | 26.2 | 7.6 |
25 | 68.7 | 61.8 | 43.4 | 25.9 | 7.6 |
20 | 58.9 | 54.0 | 40.0 | 25.2 | 7.6 |
10 | 34.1 | 32.5 | 27.5 | 20.6 | 7.5 |
5 | 18.4 | 17.9 | 16.4 | 14.0 | 7.0 |
#I don’t want to give the method of calculation rather I will discuss some points about DL method
# My opinion about this method is different, i.e. I donot think that this rule is not upto the mark. I have some reasons behind my voice. Thats are mentioned under:-
Before discussing these we have to look at the two conditions :-
CASE-I | CASE-II |
#TEAM I HAS STARTED THEIR INNINGS ; #BATTED FEW OVERS THEN INTURRUPTED ; #NO FURTHER BATTING IS NOT POSIABLE; #SET THE TARGET FOR TEAM-II FOR THE SAME NO. OF OVERS THAT TEAM –I HAS BATTED. | #TEAM- I BATTED FULL OVERS OF THEIR INNINGS THEN TEAM-II HAS STARTED THEIR INNINGS ; #BATTED FEW OVERS THEN INTURRUPTION OCCURS; #SET THE REVISED TARGET FOR TEAM-II # IF BOTH TEAM HAS PLAYED MINIMUM MORE THAN 25 OVERS THEN DECLAIR THE WINNER
|
# AS THE TEAM-I CANNOT BATTED THEIR FULL OVERS SO THE REVISED TARGET FOR TEAM –II WILL BE INCREASED . AS TEAM –I DID NOT KNOW THAT THEY TO BAT LESS 50 OVERS THAT’S WHY THEY DID NOT GET ENOUGH TIME TO PACE THEIR INNINGS. | |
# 1) In the first case the batsman start their innings knowing that they have to play 50 overs. But as in the mid of their innings interruption occurs & some over havebeen reduced, they donot enough time to pace their innings. But the 2nd team come to bat knowing that they will get that much of overs to cover their target. Duckworth-lewis does not give useful solution of this problem.
# 2) If the match hasbeen interrupted due to the rain then usually damage occurs in the pitch and the out field.Suppose when the 1st team was batting no interruption occurs, interruption occurs in the 2nd innings and obviously some change hasbeen done in the pitch & the out field. After shower batting always seemed to be more difficult & the out field become slower than it was before the rain. So, in these case the 2nd team have to suffer & the 1st team get the advantage.
I ask Mr.Duckworth in this regards, according to him its the part of a game.
He said "Variable condition of the pitch is one of those factors which affect any game of cricket, whether it is a rain-interrupted one-day game or any other, and cricket lives with such variables, which indeed help to make it the game that it is."
I donot think this answer is suffient to justify the proper condition.
# 3) They used to say that our method is so simple to implement, only a pocket calculator is sufficient to continue the method. Why they cry for that as computer is easily available in any international cricket ground?
#4) DL method conciders how many wickets are remaining but donot conciders whose wickets are remaining. According to this method there is no difference between Wicket of a batsman & Wicket of a bowler; according to this method there is no differnce between the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar & wicket of Anil Kumble. Is it possible??
In this blog I just tell about the problems , I am trying to find out the solutions of this problems. I have reached middle of my solution , but now I am facing some problems, if anyone interested in the regards contact me.
